KWlanInfo README

KWlaninfo provides some information about wlan interfaces.
It's a kicker applet and so you must start it with a right click on a empty space in the kicker panel and then add it. At time it only works proper, if the wlan interface is set to "managed" mode (Access point).

Meanwhile it's tested with many wlan cards and distributions, but some wlan drivers do not set wlan statistics proper and so you get wrong data displayed.

Installation:
tar xzf kwireless-<version>.tgz
cd kwireless
./configure [--prefix="your kde base dir"]
make
make install

Because the distributions use different kde base dirs its recommended to use ./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`.
Examples:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/kde
./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3

Description (from Daniel Caujolle-Bert): kwlaninfo segfautling under some conditions: when my card is "muted" (there's a button on my HP to turn off RF, so it can't connect the AP (so ifconfig inet address is missing, and some wireless informations are empty.

- The iwreq structure (particularly the iwr.data.length field) isn't properly initialized before invoking the SIOCGIWESSID and SIOCGIWNICKN ioctls to query the ESSID and Nickname.
- The program assumes the SIOCGIWFREQ ioctl to return the current frequency, but some drivers return the channel number instead (though this is deprecated). I have added a trivial workaround for that case. At least the ipw2200 driver used to behave that way before version 1.1.3, other drivers might still do so.
- The displayed channel number might be wrong due to inaccurate rounding.
I've sent my patch to the original author about half a year ago, but unfortunately he's to busy to apply it and release a new version. So, I figured it might still be useful to other Gentoo users.
A recent change in the kernel's wireless layer triggered yet another bug in kwlaninfo, now the applet will display an error message due to a failed ioctl() whenever the mouse hovers above it.

Size of kwlaninfo now configurable. You can choose following modes (preferences dialog):
normal: ratio height:width = 1:2
condensed: ratio height:width = 1:1
ultra condensed: ratio height:width = 2:1

You can now choose when info bar shall be visible. Following modes are availible (preferences dialog):
Mouseover: info bar is visible if you with mouse pointer over kwlaninfo
Double Click: info bar is visible on a double mouse click on kwlaninfo
(in both modes info bar is hidden if mouse pointer leaves kwlaninfo)

KWlanInfo applet still runs even of missing or removing wlan card.
In this case it displays an error and in a tooltip (mouse over kwlaninfo applet) it shows an error message.
If card will be inserted it shows the normal bar view again.
